Why not create one or more giant heatsinks to help cool the earth?

This ridiculous and funny idea popped into my head as I was hearing some people argue about global warming, and I just laughed it off silently. Then I realized I could only explain why it wouldn't work in a limited number of ways. So I know its dumb enough of an idea to even think plausible, but I really could use some more specific reasons why it wouldn't work. Disregarding all the basic logical shortfalls of the idea, if we had access to enough suitable and inert durable magical metal, and a good load of other unique drills etc, I suppose it could work...if the top extended well into orbit? Not plausible at all, but don't these ideas tend to spur new scientific research? We need more research grants and researchers committed beyond money!

  1. It would take a very large heat sink to cool the Earth, so my question is, where would you put it for best effect?
  2. A heat sink or passive heat pump provides a heat-conductive path from a heat source to a place where the heat can dissipate. The problem with Earth is where to put this heat sink and where does it dissipate to?
  3. make a big umbrella and send into outer space to block the sun from shining on the earth, that would stop global warming or attach a big bucket of water to a rocket and send it to the sun and splash the water on the sun in-order to cool the sun down you would have to put thermostat on the sun in order to control the temperature on earth.
  4. I think its a very good idea. All energy can be captured and transfered in many different ways so the idea of storing the energy produced by the sun and allowed to enter the atmosphere by degraded ozone layers etc is very plausible. The important thing to consider is how we could use that energy or is returning it back to the outer atmosphere the best answer?
  5. Where did you miss the point that we do not want the heat to rise on Earth? A heat sink of any kind on Earth would aid the rise in global warming.
