What is the best memory type and brand for this motherboard?

ASUS M2V AMD Socket AM2 VIA K8T890 chipset. I'm not sure what to get brandwise. Is 1GB significantly better than 512mb? Can I install just one RAM at a time in the motherboard or do I have to buy them all at once? Does all the RAM in the motherboard have to be the same type and brand?

  1. RAM is RAM. If it is Kingston, you must like to pay too much for your parts. One at a tim...OK... should be same, yes.
  2. Any good quality DDR2 ram should work. I myself prefer Kingmax. To get best performance you should install memory in matched pairs(equal size) to take advantage of the dual channel capability of this board. Go with 2 512mb sticks rather than 1 512mb or 2 256mb sticks.
  3. If you haven't bought that motherboard yet, DON'T buy it. Asus makes decent boards, but that is by far the worst chipset ever designed for Athlon 64's. If you've already bought it, then it's yours, and you'll need to buy RAM for it. Like both of the people above me said, RAM is RAM, although having tighter (lower) timings will make it perform faster, since the processor has to wait less clock cycles for the memory to respond. And all new processors, buy your RAM in matched sticks. Buy 2x512MB, or 2x1GB, if you know for sure that you want 2GB of system RAM. 4. Crucial.com is the best site for RAM upgrade. You can download bot that will identify exactly what options you have for upgrades.
