How bad is a tiny scratch to a motherboard?

I decided to put a computer together and bought a case, motherboard, cpu, and all that other stuff which is besides the point. After installing my motherboard i realized that the case i received was defective, so i had to remove my motherboard and return the case to get a new one. The problem I am having is that when i removed the mother i accidentally made a tiny scratch on the bottom of the motherboard by running it over the brass standoff. What i wanna know is how bad this could affect the motherboard. Thank you all in advance for your answers.

  1. i made a computer and i scratched everything lol and nothing bad happened
  2. A scratch on a motherboard is only a problem if it is on a trace. A trace is the silver lines on the board that allow current to pass through. It would have to be a really deep scratch to cause a real problem though.
  3. It depends on where it is. If you've scratched a circuit, it could affect the fuction because it may interrupt the flow of electricity through the circuit.
  4. it depends on the place the scratch is. if it didnt affect any important circuit, or no circuits at all, then there is nothing to worry about. i knew that on a motherboard, conections are made through various places and in many types, just to avoid such situations. good luck anyway
  5. horrible and you have now doomed the earth and we will all die in about 14 & 3/4 days. thanks thanks a lot. ........................ no i'm absolutely joking. i don't even know what a motherboard is. :)
  6. A deep scratch could bother you dude but as such as a small scratch, you dont need to worry at all but from now start caring.
  7. Depends on how deep the scratch is, take a magnifing glass and look at the scratch, did it penetrate past the varnish into a copper trace? If it did is the trace cut? If you cut a trace your motherboard is next to useless. If it did not cut a trace, take some fingernail polish and cover the srcatch. You need to maintain the integerty of the motherboards' seal, fingernail polish will reseal it keeping mosture out. Good question, hope my answer helps.
  8. There is no problem if no trace is cut. In that case, just seal the trace with varnish or nail polisher. If a trace is cut, the board might be saved, but you have to take precautions. Note that this only apply if the trace is not deep and only cut one level of the board (the circuits are printed inside 7 to 10 levels inside the motherboard, witch are then glued together. To fix it in case not more then the surface circuit is affected, you need to do the trace manually, using a cold soldering tool (cost about $20) or a paintbrush and cold soldering paste (cost about $8), then seal the whole thing with varnish or nail polisher. I have done it before, and it worked fine. Good luck !
